authors you wish more people read...My view of this thread is... sell an author you love to the masses... maybe a book all should read..
Tom Robbins.. Tom Robbins novels are always a quirky ride. His sense of humor and writing style have me hooked. I fell in love with the first book I read ... "Even Cowgirls get the Blues" please please the movie doesn't compare... a hitchhiker born with unusual thumbs...others I have read and loved include..."Another Roadside Attraction"... secret vatican plots and ninja priests.. "Still life with woodpecker" sort of an anarchist terrorist love story?
Anyway .. sell your author here...

Great topic! I wish I could join in Don, but I have this affliction, although I've read many books, I have trouble remembering names  Apart from Patricia Cornwell (which is really odd) I can remember her! I'm being serious, I really do have a memory block with actors, authors etc, Shelley is always laughing at me, even characters in soaps I watch daily, I have trouble recalling! I've just started actively reading again, I will try to write down authors who I like and hopefully I will be able to sell them to you all lol

Everyone should read more Scott Westerfeld! His books are really really good! The Uglies/Pretties/Specials/Extras series is exceptionally great, I think I posted a topic about them already, though. Also, his Midnighters trilogy is great.
Midnighters - Book 1: The Secret Hour
Fifteen year old Jessica Day moves with her mom from Chicago to Bixby, Oklahoma where she attends the local high school. She looks like she belongs with the in- crowd, but the most isolated outsiders, the midnighters (Rex, Dess, Melissa, and Jonathan) are also fascinated by the newcomer as they sense she shares the Focus that only occurs for those born at midnight.
Jessica awakens at midnight noticing that her family seems frozen in time and so does everyone else. She explores this magical twenty-fifth hour in the day only to learn that ancient creatures roam the town and the midnight quartet also travel in this eerie otherworldly zone. As the cretins of the night try to kill the newcomer, the quartet try to keep Jessica safe while struggling to learn why she is a target.
The first tale of the Midnighters is a great horror story that is aimed at young adults, but will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. The story line is fast-paced and somehow Scott Westerfield makes his blue-lighted midnight realm seem real and the talents of his heroes genuine. This is a winner worth reading especially by the Potter crowd who will find a new genre in which to appreciate the written word. If this is any indication, the next two novels in this trilogy will be awesome.

Sounds interesting Steph. I love mysteries/thrillers! Lately I've been getting into zombie movies and books as that's all the rave now...I'll have to keep an eye out for Scott Westerfeld's books. Thanks!

Definatley 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' by Mark Haddon - I adore this book and author, i got his new book for christmas but haven't read it yet as im in the middle of another book!

I've heard of that book Stacey. I haven't read it yet but heard it's supposed to be really good. I think it's amazing how some children can have Aspergers syndrome or autism and be so highly functional and genious-like in certain areas such as mathematics or sports, music, art, etc!

Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" is probably my favourite novel of all time. I've read it cover to cover at least 3 times. It is autobiographical novel that has characters based on Kerouac's friends -- such as allen ginsburg, neil cassady. The plot is a cross country (USA) trip in the 1950s.
If you have never read this novel, YOU NEED TO !!!
Kerouac was a great writer ,but lived a short time. Some of his other novels are Dharma Bums, Big Sur, and Visions of Cody.
He grew up in Massachusetts ,but had Quebecois (French Canadian) parents. Many authors have been strongly influenced by him including Tom Robbins and Ken Kesey.
many musicians such as morrissey, Bob Dylan, and Simon and Garfunkel have also been influenced by his work.
