Favourite comic or graphic novel as filmthere have been many comic books that have been adapted into movies .. xmen, ghost rider, fantastic 4 , even barbwire and teenage mutant turtles...
several graphic novels.. 300, V for vendetta, ronin etc...
which ones are your faves?? why are so many movies based on this medium ??
Are there any you would like to see adapted as a movie???...
I guess my favourite series of films is the xmen.. as a reader of the comics I see problems with continuity .. characters appear in the movie that do not appear in the comic until later... wolverine is one of fav comics characters but in the movies he does not sound canadian ??? but still love all the movies thus far...
300 ... is a great interpretation of the frank miller graphic novel... it has the same feel as its comic counterpart.
As far as ones I would like to see, are any of the graphic novels based on the sandman comic series by Neil Gaiman ( he also wrote the novels-- American Gods, anansi boys , and stardust (the last adapted into a movie) and cowrote the screenplay for Beowolf, etc...)
By far my favourite comic book series it is The Sandman ... It is a series of story arcs collected in graphic novels including seasons in the mist, a doll's house, and a game of you etc... It features a character "dream, Morpheus" the 'god'of sleep, his sisters and bros 'death' 'destruction' 'delerium' etc... a fantastic read!!!!!
Why so popular ??
1) graphic novels are so visual the shots for a director are already there!!!
2) popularity of the characters ... xmen ... comics, animated shows, many many products...

I'm with you Don on the Xmen, and I really like the Fantastic 4 too. I was never really into comics, well I was but mine were girly ones, so not much chance of making a decent film from one of those lol. I obviously remember some from my younger brother or other kids having them.
The Anansi boys you mentioned, I really recognise that, what was that about? Not sure if I've read that, but deffo rings a bell.
I'm surprised the series Heroes wasn't adapted from a comic book, or was it? If not it was surely inspired by one.
I wouldn't know what comics are available to kids nowadays, my kids have never been, apart from Martin who collected the whole series of Horrible History

The Crow - friggin love this movie, saw it twice at the cinema when it came out. Seen it "a few" times on DVD/VHS since. Didn't know much about it when I first saw it, but was blown away.
I don't think it's just because it's a perfect blend of action, horror, romance, drama, revenge & comedy (Funboy: "look what you did to my sheets"), it succeeds where other films have failed as it featured a star who could actually act - such a shame he (Brandon Lee) never got to see the finished movie
I quite liked the X-Men flicks (i've only seen the first two), but can't compare to the comics as not a comic reader. The first Batman film starring Michael Keaton i really liked; probably as he played opposite such a cool bad guy (Jack Nicholson). the follow-up, Batman Returns was "o.k." but it kinda went down hill fast from there. Adapted from the comic book/manga Crying Freeman starring Mark ('why isn't he more famous') Dacascos is also pretty cool.
Another comic book/manga adaption I highly recommend is Azumi. It's a Japanese film from 2003 featuring a group of kids trained as assassins to later kill ruthless warlords, thus creating a peaceful nation.... in other words, we get an energetic young cast, roaming around Japan maiming the bad-guys with excellent sword choreography & lots of splurts of the red stuff

if you mean Azumi, yep, subtitled (i believe dubbed films remove half the actor's performance; hence why most are poo!)... i been meaning to copy for my buddy, when i do i'll do you 1 too & give to your sexy sibling

I really liked The Crow as well a great movie with a cool soundtrack. I haven't read a lot of manga and havent seen Azumi. It sounds cool... One manga adaption I liked is the Akira animated film from 1988... I think it was the first manga based movies that had wide release in North America and europe..
Another graphic novel film I liked was Sin City. I have always admired Frank Miller's comics from way back when he worked on Daredevil and then batman etc.. He actually co-directed the film and actual storyboards form his comic were used to set up shots etc..
A few films I am looking forward to are the Watchmen based on Allan Moore's series also Wolverine: the origins -- set before wolverine joined the x-men..

...they used a similar ploy in the Andrew Lau directed Hong Kong triad flick Young & Dangerous (based on a local hit comic series) where they'd join scenes with comic frames or use them to speed along the plot a bit. though the film didn't feel like a Hollywood or manga based comic-book movie, as was set in the 'real' world.

i watched the 2004 version of The Punisher this morning, i have to say, i actually enjoyed it, sure there are a few crap bits (including John Travolta's acting; he just can't play bad-guys!), but what film's perfect? yes, the critics got it wrong again!
Thomas Jane is cool as Frank Castle & i liked the way the comic-book's skull t-shirt was worked into the movie. Even though this screen adaption has more drama & chracter development, i think, as a whole, i still prefer the 1989 Dolph Lundgren version, even if it did have that annoying alcoholic/poet/informer character.
i must admit, i'm a sucker for revenge movies!!

I saw that when it came out Skip and I enjoyed it too, haven't seen the 1989 Dolph Lundgren version, so can't compare it

Perhaps the worst of all movies to come from a great comic was Judge Dredd with Sly Stallone .. I loved the comic and man if I paid to see it in a Cinema I would have asked for my money back...

One forgot to mention very worth seeing is Road to Perdition
It was a great film and I didn't realize until after I saw it that it was based on a graphic novel...

that's the problem with comics/graphic novels being adapted for the big screen, if you love the original media then chances are that the screen version won't live up to expectations. it's the same with novels, i know alot of Lord Of The Rings book fans slagged off the movie, but it's a movie - not a book, it's made for entertaining the people (such as myself) who can't find the time or effort to read such a dense work.
the Judge Dredd movie i actually saw at the cinema, i found it entertaining, but kinda crap & predictable in places. though not a comic reader, i'm aware of the death judges (is that their name??) & think they could've made it much darker. two things i didn't like with the flick; Rob Scheider's comedy relief character should've been omitted from the entire film & think an unknown actor would've been more suited to the titular role.

Azumi was great! Another movie adaptation of a manga series is Shinobi: Heart Under Blade. It's subtitled, too. It's about two lovers who are from warring tribes and they both end up the leaders of their villages and end up having to fight one another...its a sad love story with plenty of action. I'd have to say my favorite movie from comics is V for Vendetta. I love V! He was so awesome!

i thought i knew the title from somewhere, the star of Shinobi - Jo Odagiri, was also in Azumi (i had to IMDB him!!). not seen it yet, but meant to be pretty good, i'll watch it when i get chance.

I've seen clips all this week of the new film out 'Ironman' another superhero, but is he from a comic? or just a new character?
|

yes Serenity, i maybe wrong, but i'm pretty sure he's a comic character (from Marvel i think??)
there are so many comic characters that most non-comic readers haven't heard of, so as long as they keep making bucks i guess we'll be seeing alot more. i think the Nicolas Cage flick Ghost Rider was another recent one??

Yeah, Ironman is a Marvel comic character. And Ghost Rider as well.
Lol, my Calculus instructor is so awesome! He is into rock/techno music, loves to play Rock Band, and is holding our class an hour earlier so he can go to the premiere of Ironman in Memphis, TN College instructors are awesome. Well, so far....
