Reading

The best collection of books I've ever read, has to be the Patricia Cornwell books. The whole series of Dr Kay Scarpetta, were so good, I was totally engrossed. Kay is a forensic pathologist, investigator. She's first on the scene of any murders, then tries to piece together all the evidence she finds, carries out post mortems etc. These books are very gripping, and quite gory. Great explanation in detail of her work and you really get drawn into the storys. Theres quite a few books in this series, I'll try to find a list for you. But anyone who likes an edgy read, that keeps you enthralled then these are the ones for you!

Well I started reading Gloria Hunnifords book Next to you about a year and a half ago, But it was so sad to read about her daughter that I kept crying, I had to read the first two pages about five times as I couldnt see through my tears!! I will get to finish it soon, Caron was a positive person.
MJH

Shell ill read it after you !!

I love james Patterson and have just finished hide and seek which is quite an old one and Minette Walters - just waiting for her next one as ive read everyone of her collection

Havent read any by Gloria Hunniford but do like the other 2 authors. Recently I have been looking around at other author's and have come across CONN IGGULDEN who has written best seller "Emperor" series. (It's a novel not a documentary) Didn't think I would like it to begin with but really now enjoy his books. I am reading one at the moment called "Wolf of the Plains!" about Monguls and Tartars. Fascinating reading and definately absorbing

Currently reading Body Farm by Patricia Cornwell and Thunderpoint by Jack Higgins. I also enjoy John Le Carre ( Smiley's People etc.)

I've just started  reading Pat Cornwells Book Of The Dead...its her latest (I think)...I love her books !

Just finished a true story by David Thomas called Tell Me Why Mummy, about a little boy who was sexually abused by his mother and physically abused by his step father. The abuse is a little uncomfortable reading but its not graphic so wasn't too bad.  It wasn't as heartwrenching as some I've read, but it was an interesting read.

i've read all the books by Anne Rice.  I love her books ...The Vampire Chronicles- 10 books in total, the New Tales of the Vampires-2 books & The Mayfair Witches -3 books and her individual stand alone novels.
She uses a lot of events in history in her books and i can't put them down when i start them

I am also a fan of Patricia Cornwell. Right now I am reading "Two Little Girls in Blue" by Mary Higgins Clarke. I have read all of her novels. It is about the twin connection between two 3 year old twin girls who are kidnapped and only one is returned and the found twin (with the aide of a twin behaviour specialist) delves into her 'twin talk/connection' to help find her sister.

Those books that you mentioned by Anne Rice Shirley sound quite interesting particularly with the historical background  I have put her down in my list of authors for the library and see if I can get one there.

I'm realy struggling with Patricia Cornwells Book Of The Dead It doesn't have what the others have, and It's one of those books where I can read three pages, and not know what I've read becaue I'm glazing over , so have to go back over it. If you get what I mean? It's not gripping me, I'm pushing myself to the end of a chapter, when normally I can't put her books down

I'm reading 'Predator' by Patricia Cornwell now Debbie. It's another one of her Scarpetta books. Not familiar with 'Book of the Dead' is it of the Scarpetta series? The author expertly details forensics and medicine among other things which can be complicating and tedious at times.
Serenity

Yes it's her latest offering Kris, in the Scarpetta series book 15 I think . I've read every one and loved just about all of them. This one is just disappointing to say the least.

That's too bad...If I come across it I may avoid purchasing it...I also found the last few I've read from the Scarpetta series not as entertaining as the others...often getting bored and re-reading the same page over and over again...thought it was just me!  I think she's exhausted the Scarpetta chief ME books unless she comes up with something totally different and original to keep her readers hooked.

I just read Firestorm by Iris Johansen which was really good and am now reading another one of her books called Countdown. (I think it's from 2005). Very exciting tho! She certainly gives her readers what they want!
I can't wait til Mary Higgins Clarke comes out with her new novel! She's my fave writer.

Reading a wonderful Anne Tyler book "Digging to America".  Read most of her many books--she's brilliant at drawing out the quirkiness of the ordinary.

"In what is perhaps her richest and most deeply searching novel, Anne Tyler gives us a story about what it is to be an American, and about Maryam Yazdan, who after thirty-five years in this country must finally come to terms with her “outsiderness.”

Two families, who would otherwise never have come together, meet by chance at the Baltimore airport—the Donaldsons, a very American couple, and the Yazdans, Maryam's fully assimilated son and his attractive Iranian American wife. Each couple is awaiting the arrival of an adopted infant daughter from Korea. After the babies from distant Asia are delivered, Bitsy Donaldson impulsively invites the Yazdans to celebrate with an “arrival party,” an event that is repeated every year as the two families become more deeply intertwined.

Even independent-minded Maryam is drawn in. But only up to a point. When she finds herself being courted by one of the Donaldson clan, a good-hearted man of her vintage, recently widowed and still recovering from his wife's death, suddenly all the values she cherishes—her traditions, her privacy, her otherness—are threatened. Somehow this big American takes up so much space that the orderly boundaries of her life feel invaded.

A luminous novel brimming with subtle, funny, and tender observations that cast a penetrating light on the American way as seen from two perspectives, those who are born here and those who are still struggling to fit in".

A Canadian writer, Kathy Reichs, is a practicing forensic anthropologist.  Based on her  own criminal cases, she has written about 10 "mysteries".
Much less sensational than P Cornwall who has really gone too bizarre for my taste.

Will keep a look out for Anne and Kathy on the Library van when it comes round on Thursday Lucie, It's always nice to have recommendations of whos good and not

I know what you mean Debs - there's nothing worse particularly if it is an author you have liked and read and it's disappointing.

I'm reading a book at the moment by Robert Jordan.  I know it may sound mystical etc when talking about the power of wizards etc but it is set in very olden times of the gods and the story line I think is very gripping - I couldn't put it down.  This is the first time I have read his books and I was so taken with it that I have ordered a few of his books in the continuing series - hope they are as good
chibi_steph18

I just finished Lynn Kurland's "Star of the Morning" which was awesome! Now I've five new books I just bought to decide which I want to read. I'll probably settle on either So Yesterday by Scott Westerfeld, or Glass Houses by Rachel Caine.
Serenity

Whats that book called Hannah, it sounds good?? I love mystical

Debs - It's Robert Jordan's Wheel of time series - I am nw on book five and enjoying every minute of it.  They are very thick books (1000 pages in most of them) Some of the titles are (in order)

The Eye of the World  (1 and 2)
The great hunt
the dragon reborn ( this is a name not a dragon)
the shadow rising
the fires of heaven (which I am reading at the moment)

I don't know what amazon sells them for but I order mine from Play.com and get a few pounds of each one with free delivery
Serenity

Hey thats brill thanks Hannah, i'll have a hunt around

I'm reading 'Rage' by Jonathan Kellerman. He is a famous american author and all his books are #1 New York bestsellers. This is the first book I've read by him and I'm really enjoying it. I found a few more of his books at our library so I'm eager to give them a read too. He is a clinical psychologist that specializes in adolescent violence. He writes mostly mysteries/legal thrillers based on true life crimes which are all very chilling and suspenseful.
Serenity

Well I'm ashamed to say I've only just finished Patricia Cornwells latest 'Book Of The Dead' it was that boring, I had to keep forcing myself to read on. I was more than disappointed, and shan't be bothering with anymore of her offerings. I hate being let down!  Missed the Library van AGAIN, so will have to take a drive to the main Library or the sub  sometime this week and pick up some of the books you've all mentioned
Selious5

I like books with a bit of a bite - no lovely dovey stuff but a number of authors
Dean Koontz,  Wilbur Smith to name a few have  recently been so disappointing with their last books - very rubbishy.  I won't be adding any more to my collection from them. I often wonder if these are books that have been written before they became acclaimed authors and they are now churning them out similarly teh P Cornwell books
Serenity

It does make you wonder doesn't it Hannah, or whether they can't come up with any good ideas so start reeling off these half hearted attempts because they are simply out of good ideas...all at our expense unfortunately!
Serenity

I've just caught a bit of the Book Awards on UK tv, and Patricia Cornwell won an award for her 'Book of the Dead' !!! They didnt ask me to review it lol!

Kris's mom here - I was wondering if any of you care for Michael Connelly.  His character Harry Bosch is quite interesting.  A crime scene detective that always goes out on a limb for every case.  Most are psychological thrillers.
Two of his titles are:  The Narrows and The Poet.  The Poet is excellent reading.
