StargirlStargirl, by Jerry Spinelli, is more of a young adult book than anything else, it's main characters being of early high school age, but this book is full of meaning. This is the first book I truly fell in love with, because the story (at the risk of sounding cliche) really spoke to me. Here's a review for you:
This book is about Leo Borlock, and the new girl that comes to Mica High School that steals his heart. Stargirl Caraway is anything but normal. The students at Mica don't really have identities because they all conform to each other, so they don't really know how to handle her individuality. At first, they all find her unique personality rare and intriguing, and she becomes the most popular girl in school. But as they continue watching her come to school in her strange clothes, strumming her ukulele and singing happy birthday to people in the cafeteria, they grow weary of her ways and begin to shun her. The one leading this discrimination against her is Hillari Kimble, a popular girl who won't accept Stargirl unless she changes herself to be like the rest of them. Leo is torn with the decision to whether give up his friends and reputation to be with the girl he has fallen for, or to stay with the crowd and risk losing her.

That sounds really good Steph! A real coming of age novel. I've always enjoyed reading about heroines who stand out from the crowd and embrace their individuality instead of following the pack.
So did Leo Borlock maintain her independence, become a lemming or find a happy medium between the two?
