there have been many comic books that have been adapted into movies .. xmen, ghost rider, fantastic 4 , even barbwire and teenage mutant turtles...

several graphic novels.. 300, V for vendetta, ronin etc...

which ones are your faves?? why are so many movies based on this medium ??

Are there any you would like to see adapted as a movie???...

I guess my favourite series of films is the xmen.. as a reader of the comics I see problems with continuity .. characters appear in the movie that do not appear in the comic until later... wolverine is one of fav comics characters but in the movies he does not sound canadian ??? but still love all the movies thus far...

300 ... is a great interpretation of the frank miller graphic novel... it  has the same feel as its comic counterpart.

As far as ones I would like to see, are  any of the graphic novels based on the sandman comic series by Neil Gaiman ( he also wrote the novels-- American Gods, anansi boys , and stardust (the last adapted into a movie) and  cowrote the screenplay for Beowolf, etc...)

By far my favourite comic book series it is The Sandman ... It is a series of story arcs collected in graphic novels including seasons in the mist, a doll's house, and a game of you etc... It features a character "dream, Morpheus" the 'god'of sleep, his sisters and bros 'death' 'destruction' 'delerium' etc...  a fantastic read!!!!!

Why so popular ??

1) graphic novels are so visual the shots for a director are already there!!!

2) popularity of the characters ... xmen ... comics, animated shows, many many products...

I'm with you Don on the Xmen, and I really like the Fantastic 4 too. I was never really into comics, well I was but mine were girly ones, so not much chance of making a decent film from one of those lol. I obviously remember some from my younger brother or other kids having them.

The Anansi boys you mentioned, I really recognise that, what was that about? Not sure if I've read that, but deffo rings a bell.

I'm surprised the series Heroes wasn't adapted from a comic book, or was it? If not it was surely inspired by one.

I wouldn't know what comics are available to kids nowadays, my kids have never been, apart from Martin who collected the whole series of Horrible History

The Crow - friggin love this movie, saw it twice at the cinema when it came out. Seen it "a few" times on DVD/VHS since. Didn't know much about it when I first saw it, but was blown away.

I don't think it's just because it's a perfect blend of action, horror, romance, drama, revenge & comedy (Funboy: "look what you did to my sheets"), it succeeds where other films have failed as it featured a star who could actually act - such a shame he (Brandon Lee) never got to see the finished movie

I quite liked the X-Men flicks (i've only seen the first two), but can't compare to the comics as not a comic reader.  The first Batman film starring Michael Keaton i really liked; probably as he played opposite such a cool bad guy (Jack Nicholson). the follow-up, Batman Returns was "o.k." but it kinda went down hill fast from there. Adapted from the comic book/manga Crying Freeman starring Mark ('why isn't he more famous') Dacascos is also pretty cool.

Another comic book/manga adaption I highly recommend is Azumi.  It's a Japanese film from 2003 featuring a group of kids trained as assassins to later kill ruthless warlords, thus creating a peaceful nation.... in other words, we get an energetic young cast, roaming around Japan maiming the bad-guys with excellent sword choreography & lots of splurts of the red stuff

I really liked The Crow as well a great movie with a cool soundtrack. I haven't read a lot of manga and havent seen Azumi. It sounds cool... One manga adaption I liked is the Akira animated film from 1988... I think it was the first manga based movies that had wide release in North America and europe..

Another graphic novel film I liked was Sin City. I have always admired Frank Miller's comics from way back when he worked on Daredevil and then batman etc.. He actually co-directed the film and actual storyboards form his comic were used to set up shots etc..

A few films I am looking forward to are the Watchmen based on Allan Moore's series also Wolverine: the origins -- set before wolverine joined the x-men..
