I  rem my dad making 2 go karts 1 for the girls /1 for the boys we didn't have much money so couldn't have a bike and the go kart was the next best thing , he made them out of any old wood , old pram wheels , and piece of rope which you used to steer the kart , the neighbours kids wanted one as well so dad ended up making 4/5 for the neighbours  , don't know where the pram wheels came from but the kids found some and brought them round , we used to have races on that flipping hill , go to the top slight push and away you went , we used our feet to stop , if you reached the bottom you were lucky the steering was terrible loads of crashes and turning them over , dad was forever repairing them  but what fun . the only expense was getting the nails and rope  oh happy days !

its stuff like that which makes an upbringing memorable, making what you can out of anything you can. my family never had much money but we always seemed to manage with whatever we had. me and my brothers had a go-kart we "made" ourselves. was great until one day my brothers dared me to ride it down the big hill behind our house, i was lucky i didnt end up in the same condition the kart did. one of the wheels came off half way down but i was goin too fast to stop and ended up in the bush at the bottom.

didnt stop us fixin it though lol

kids these days dont know what theyre missin

my brothers n me used to make these ...we used ta ask girls a few doors down from us to join in and then nick the wheels off their prams for the cart ...

there was a street that all our little streets branched off that was a steep steep hill....so yep off we went to the top climbed on cart n took off..

I haven't a clue how none of us were killed with cars going up or down the street.. we thought we owned it so always drove down middle...

kids now don't have the imagination/patience to make or do these kinds of things nowadays...  which i think is very very sad

How right everyone is and what memories they bring back-  all these homemade things and the fun and enjoyment out of the making and using of them.  Strange how the risks you took never entered your head then.   I think money seemed a lot tighter years ago but we were happy with the simple things - everyone was in the same boat so to speak.  I can never remember being bored as the kids can be nowadays,  There always seemed so much to do and so many friends to play with

OOhhhhhhhhhhh julie !! I'd forgotten all about go karts lol the hours of fun we had on those!! And yes how strange that no matter whnen you made one you always had a set of pram wheels? lolol I think ours probably came from the nearby dump we used to have great fun scavenging for treasure there!  I can also remember as we didn't have hills that you'd have someone pushing as fast as they could from behind, and you could guarantee at least one of us would trip and end up with grazed knees and fingers   Those were the good days ! *sigh*
